Frequently Asked Questions for Volunteers

Children under age 15 are not permitted on work sites. Children ages 15-18 must be with an adult.

Where do we meet?

At the work site at 9am. Call the office the week before to find out where we will be working. Report to the site supervisor at the site for your task assignment.

Who is in charge?

Every build day is led by a construction site supervisor with professional training and experience.

What do I bring?

  • Lunch and drinks (coolers are not provided so pack appropriately)
  • Water
  • Work Gloves
  • Wear old work clothes – you will get dirty.
  • Wear sturdy shoes - no sandals, house slippers or open toed shoes
  • Bring rain and/or sun protection
  • Towelettes for the Porta Potties
  • Flexibility, patience, a sense of humor and cooperative spirit

What cannot be brought to the Build Site?

What about tools?

If you have them bring a hammer, nail belt, tape measure, pencil, utility knife, and any hand tools on build days. Please have your name on your tools. Habitat will not be responsible for misplaced personal tools. On painting days, supplies will be at the site or you may bring your own brushes and rollers.

Do I need safety equipment?

Masks, safety glasses and ear protection will sometimes be needed. If you can not bring your own, safety equipment appropriate to the assigned tasks will be available.

What will the full day be like?

  • Sign in 9:00 am
  • Staff will assign tasks and give instructions and safety tips as needed; ask questions if unclear
  • Around Noon - break for lunch
  • After lunch work until the day’s tasks are finished
  • Clean up
  • Work Day ends when the work is done which may be as late as 4:00 pm.

What if I can’t work the full day?

Come when you can and work as long as you can. There is no need to stay all day. We appreciate whatever you can do to help.

We work regardless of the weather.
